Address Change Instructions
This is a list of tax forms BYUH provides, with general information for each.
- Form W-4: This form is used by employees to provide information to their employers about the amount of federal income tax to withhold from their paychecks. It allows employees to specify their filing status, withholding allowances, and any additional withholding amounts. It is preferred that BYUH employees use the online form in Workday. Instructions are available in this video tutorial.
- Form HW-4: This is a Hawaii state tax withholding form used by employees to specify their filing status, withholding allowances, and additional withholding amounts, ensuring accurate withholding of Hawaii state income tax from their paychecks. It is preferred that BYUH employees use the online form in Workday. Instructions are available in this video tutorial.
- Form W-2: All BYUH employees (and PCC student employees paid from BYUH) receive a W-2 form that reports their wages, taxes withheld, and any other compensation. The university will issue this form by Jan 31st of each year.
- Form 1042-S: This form serves to report certain types of income paid to foreign persons, including non-resident aliens, along with any tax withheld on that income. Most international students at BYUH receive Form 1042-S if they receive student aid that exceeds tuition and mandatory fees. The university will mail this form by March 15th of each year.
- Form 1098-T: This form is the Tuition Statement that the school uses to report qualified tuition and related education expenses to you and the IRS. You or your parent/guardian may be able to claim these expenses as education-related tax credits. The university will issue this form by Jan 31st of each year.
- 1099-NEC: This form reports payments of $600 or more made to non-employees for services rendered.
- 1099-MISC: This form reports miscellaneous income payments of $600 or more made to non-employees or entities, such as rent, royalties, and awards.
All international students must file an annual tax return in order to fulfill visa obligations and remain legal under F & J visas. This includes filing both a federal and state tax return.
Important information regarding the 1042-S tax form
- All international students are strongly encouraged to wait until after March 20th to file their tax return because most will likely receive a 1042-S form by that date. If you file before this date and later receive a 1042-S, you will need to amend your tax return to make corrections. The IRS requires attaching the 1042-S to your tax return if you receive one.
- If you don't receive a 1042-S by March 20th or shortly thereafter, you can safely assume you were not sent one (assuming your mailing address within Workday is current) and may proceed with submitting your tax return without a 1042-S.

FAQs

Toggle ItemI am an international student on a scholarship. Do I need to be concerned about receiving a 1042-S form, and what does it mean for my taxes?
If you're an international student on a scholarship, you may receive a 1042-S form if part of your scholarship covers taxable expenses like room, board, or personal costs, which are subject to U.S. tax. This form reports income that may require you to file a tax return. However, if your scholarship only covers tuition and required fees, you typically won’t receive a 1042-S because those expenses are not taxable.

Toggle ItemAm I considered a Resident or a Non-Resident Alien for Tax purposes?
International students on F, J, and M visas are generally considered nonresident aliens for tax purposes during their first five calendar years in the United States. After five years, their status may change, and they may be considered resident aliens for tax purposes. It's important to note that individual circumstances can affect tax status, so consulting with a tax professional, such as Sprintax customer representatives, is a good idea to determine your situation.
